How to Track Macros Without Weighing Every Ingredient
Log protein, carbs, fat, and fiber by photo: learn how Mira's three macro presets work and how to hit your daily protein target without a kitchen scale.
Why Macros Matter Alongside Calories
Whenever you log a meal by photo, voice, or text, Mira estimates protein (`4 kcal/g`), carbohydrates (`4 kcal/g`), fat (`9 kcal/g`), and dietary fiber alongside total calories. While energy balance determines scale weight over weeks, macronutrient distribution governs hunger between meals, training recovery, and whether weight lost in a deficit comes from fat stores or skeletal muscle (Morton et al., 2018).
| Mira Macro Preset | Split (Protein / Carbs / Fat) | Example at `2,000 kcal/day` | When to Choose This Preset |
|---|---|---|---|
| Balanced (`30 / 45 / 25`) | `30%` · `45%` · `25%` | `150 g` protein · `225 g` carbs · `56 g` fat | Everyday mixed whole-food meals, endurance & maintenance |
| High Protein (`40 / 35 / 25`) | `40%` · `35%` · `25%` | `200 g` protein · `175 g` carbs · `56 g` fat | Calorie deficits, higher satiety & lean muscle preservation |
| Low Carb (`30 / 20 / 50`) | `30%` · `20%` · `50%` | `150 g` protein · `100 g` carbs · `111 g` fat | Lower glycemic load & higher dietary fat preference |
Alongside your chosen preset, Mira calculates a dynamic fiber target (`max(25 g, round(kcal / 1000 × 14.6))`), which equals `29 g/day` at a `2,000 kcal/day` budget.
Capture First, Refine What Matters
Traditional macro tracking fails because dissecting a home-cooked stew or restaurant plate into twelve separate database entries is exhausting. Mira flips the workflow:
- Snap a photo of your plate (or scan the nutrition facts table on packaged foods).
- Check the primary protein source and starch portion once the entry finishes processing in your journal.
- Add a 5-word note for invisible cooking fats if olive oil, butter, nuts, or creamy dressings were used.
In a bowl of rice, roasted vegetables, and salmon, most of the protein comes from the fish, carbohydrates come from the rice, and fats shift depending on cooking oil or sauce. Adjusting the salmon or oil portion updates both calories and macros in a single tap.
Focus on Weekly Patterns Over Gram Perfection
You do not need to hit all three macro numbers to the exact gram every evening. Prioritizing your daily protein floor and fiber target inside your calorie budget delivers the vast majority of body-composition and satiety benefits.
